Message from Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
On the Occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer – 28th May 2025

As the nation observes the 27th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed Pakistan’s nuclear journey and called for renewed unity and determination to transform the country into an economic power.

In his message on the occasion, the Prime Minister thanked Allah Almighty and congratulated the people of Pakistan, saying, “Today on Youm-e-Takbeer, I thank Allah Almighty and congratulate from the core of my heart the entire nation and all patriotic Pakistanis.”

Marking 27 years since Pakistan became the seventh nuclear power in the world and the first among Muslim nations, PM Sharif emphasized that Youm-e-Takbeer was more than a celebration and was a solemn reminder of Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty.

The Prime Minister linked this year’s commemoration with what he described as Pakistan’s recent success in defending itself from “an unjustified war imposed by India.” He hailed the nation’s spirit during the May 6–10 confrontation, stating, “The joys of Youm-e-Takbeer have further increased for a nation filled with victory.”

Reflecting on the historic nuclear tests of May 28, 1998, conducted under the leadership of the then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister noted that the decision to respond with six nuclear tests, compared to India’s five, was a demonstration of “iron resolve” in the face of global pressure and sanctions.

“Mr. Nawaz Sharif represented the aspirations and national interests of the entire nation and made our geographical borders impregnable forever,” he said.

PM Shehbaz paid glowing tribute to the architects of Pakistan’s nuclear program including Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the scientific community, and the armed forces for their role in establishing Pakistan’s deterrent capability. He also lauded the public for their unwavering support and sacrifices throughout the journey.

“I salute the nation, which made immense sacrifices for the completion of the nuclear program and wrote a proud story of its determination and faith,” he stated.

Drawing parallels between the historic journey of Pakistan’s nuclear program and the formation of Pakistan itself, he invoked the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and said, “National history is a witness that the people and political leadership of Pakistan have always made the impossible possible.”

PM Shehbaz urged the nation to carry the spirit of Youm-e-Takbeer beyond defense and into economic transformation. He said, “Youm-e-Takbeer is a day of unity of the nation and declaration of non-compromise on its freedom and sovereignty. Today we pledge to make Pakistan an economic power and achieve its true place in the world. Insha Allah. Long live Pakistan.”

Message from Asif Ali Zardari, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
On the Occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer – 28th May 2025

On this momentous occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the entire nation. Today, we observe the 27th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer – a day when we demonstrated our nuclear capabilities and established strategic deterrence. This day serves as a reminder of our commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of our beloved country.

Today, we pay rich tribute to our scientists, engineers, and civil and military leadership, whose dedication and commitment made this achievement possible. We also pay tribute to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, which made the country’s defence impregnable. We also acknowledge the role of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, whose stewardship further advanced and strengthened our nuclear programme.

Becoming a nuclear power was not merely a demonstration of our technological advancement—it was a calculated decision to ensure peace through strength, to maintain the strategic balance in South Asia, and to protect our nation against any external aggression. In today’s evolving regional security situation, our nuclear capability continues to serve as a credible minimum deterrent that guarantees our peace and ensures that no one can undermine our sovereignty and national security.

Pakistan does not seek conflict and is committed to the principles of peaceful coexistence and respect for international law. In the face of recent unprovoked Indian aggression, Pakistan demonstrated its strategic patience and commitment to peace. Our calibrated response, under Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, was measured and effective, which forced the enemy to cease its hostile actions.

As we commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer, let us renew our pledge to uphold and safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country.

Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, Mr. Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, received a delegation from Los Angeles World Affairs Council (LAWAC), led by the Chair of the Board, the Honorable Maria Contreras-Sweet, and senior Board members at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Los Angeles. Consul General Mr. Asim Ali Khan also joined.

The two sides held a wide-ranging discussion on pressing global and regional matters, including economic development, energy transition, water security, demographic trends, women’s empowerment, and advancements in Pakistan’s education, information technology, mining, and energy sectors.

The LAWAC delegation commended Pakistan’s ongoing economic reforms and expressed keen interest in exploring investment opportunities across diverse sectors of Pakistan’s economy aimed at promoting inclusive and sustainable development and bilateral economic cooperation.

Ambassador Sheikh provided a detailed briefing on the security environment in South Asia, highlighting the success of Operation Bunyad-un-Marsoos. He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to lasting peace and regional stability, emphasizing that a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, remains central to long-term peace in the region.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Sheikh addressed a public session hosted by World Affairs Council In his remarks, he presented an in-depth overview of Pakistan’s economic recovery, its vision for “peace with dignity,” and the evolving trajectory of Pakistan–U.S. bilateral relations. He noted that Pakistan’s internationally- recognized economic stabilization and growth strategies are intrinsically tied to a stable and secure regional environment.

He emphasized that Pakistan has demonstrated its unwavering resolve, strength, and capability to effectively repel Indian aggression, and will not hesitate to restore strategic deterrence in the region to safeguard regional and international peace and security should India undertook any future misadventure.

Ambassador Sheikh also emphasized the importance of upholding international treaties and legal frameworks, particularly in relation to transboundary water resources, which are closely linked to national security and sustainable development of hundreds of millions people in the region.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the role of the United States in facilitating the recent ceasefire in the region. Underscoring the broad-ranging and multifaceted partnership between Pakistan and the United States, including in the area of counter-terrorism, Ambassador Sheikh reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment and the need to further expand bilateral cooperation, especially in the backdrop of emerging geopolitical developments. He welcomed continued U.S. engagement in advancing peace and addressing core regional challenges, including its readiness for the lasting resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The Ambassador urged the international community to take serious cognizance of the alarming rise in fascist and jingoistic rhetoric emanating from an increasingly reckless and hegemonic regime in India, driven by the extremist Hindutva ideology and the influence of the RSS. He warned that such irresponsible, hostile, and provocative posturing poses a serious threat to regional peace, stability, and security.

Answering questions from the participants he encouraged all stakeholders, including institutions like LAWAC, to remain actively engaged in promoting global peace and dialogue and thanked the World Affairs Council for its engagement.
