The California State Senate unanimously adopted a resolution today titled “Pakistani-American Relations” in honor of the upcoming 78th Independence Day of Pakistan on August 14, 2024. Mr. Asim Ali Khan, the Consul General of Pakistan in Los Angeles led a delegation to Sacramento, as the official representative of the Government of Pakistan to witness the Senate’s proceedings. Other officials of the Consulate General and prominent members of Pakistani-American community also joined the delegation.
California Senator Josh Newman, a well-wisher of Pakistan and a friend of the Pakistani-American community, introduced the resolution, which was passed with consensus. The resolution has been widely appreciated by the Pakistani-American community in California and the people of Pakistan in different parts of the world.
As the largest state in the U.S., California’s resolution is a testament to the strong bonds and mutual respect shared by the two nations and their peoples. The resolution also acknowledges Pakistan’s leadership role in inspiring other nations in their pursuit of liberty, justice, and equality.
This constructive legislative step highlights the invaluable contributions of the Pakistani-American diaspora. Such initiatives will not only foster deeper cooperation between Pakistan and the United States but also serve as a catalyst for the Pakistani-American community to further strengthen the ties between our two countries. The California Senate has set a commendable precedent.
The delegation also interacted with house majority and minority leaders, the Speaker and other California legislators including those from South Asian descent.
Today marks a historic moment for Pakistan-U.S. relations and the Pakistani-American community, as both houses of California’s legislature—the State Senate and the State Assembly—concurrently recognized the significance of Pakistan-U.S. relations and honored Pakistan’s delegation during their sessions. The Consul General conveyed warm wishes to the leadership of both houses on behalf of the Government of Pakistan and conveyed gratitude to legislators in both houses on behalf of the Pakistani-American community based in California.
